Meet the crew

  • Ira spiegal - director

My career in film sound spans from the analog days of the early ’80s to today’s digital era, across both documentaries and features, and I’ve always sought to go beyond the technical, using sound to connect audiences to the deeper meaning of a film. Now, as a director, I’m shaping sound and image from inception, bringing decades of experience to tell the story of a community that no longer exists. Having spent formative years at Sound One, I have a deep love for the studio and the people who made it extraordinary. This project aims to illuminate the craft for both insiders and newcomers, creating a moving testament to the artistry and legacy of Sound One.

  • shari johanson - director

My art is music editing…intuitively deconstructing and reconstructing a composer’s sketches to shape a film’s score, connect with characters’ emotions, and build a thematic arc. That same instinct led me from Philadelphia to New York and to Sound One, the place that changed my life and shaped my career. Sound One: A Love Letter is expanding my creative practice into co-directing, combining problem-solving with intuition to tell a story that honors the community Bill Nisselson and Elisha Berenbaum built. My goal is to inspire the next generation to create the kind of collaborative space we had, while balancing this work with my ongoing career in music editing, bringing every ounce of my artistry into making this film.

  • Morgan Neville- Creative producer

Morgan Neville began her career at Sound One in 1991 as an intern on Robert De Niro’s A Bronx Tale, leading to over 15 years as a first assistant editor before moving into lead editing roles for emerging New York filmmakers. Along the way, she earned recognition including Best Editor for Babs at the Hollywood Women’s International Film Festival. Having launched her career within its walls, Morgan shares a deep love for Sound One and the community it fostered. As editor of Sound One: A Love Letter, she brings a finely tuned sense of timing, story, and rhythm shaped by decades of experience.

  • Carlos Cano- Producer

A longtime studio manager and post-production professional, Carlos Cano merges deep technical expertise with a passion for collaborative filmmaking. A former Sound One team member, he carries forward the studio’s creative spirit, fostering post-production environments built on generosity, mentorship, and artistic family. For Sound One: A Love Letter.

  • Riley Houck-Assistant editor

Riley Houck is a post-production assistant and recent graduate of St John’s University. A former student of director Ira Spiegel, Riley has worked on dozens of independent films/student projects including the short film, Lost Cause, which he wrote and directed. Riley has experience in photo editing, sound editing, and sound mixing. Riley is honored to be a part of Sound One: A Love Letter. He believes that this film pays beautiful homage to Sound One and conveys the significance of sound editing and community to the next generation of filmmakers.

  • Chris orso-Assistant editor

Christopher Orso is a filmmaker and editor based in Staten Island. A graduate of St. John’s University (May 2025), he draws inspiration from his experience as a born-and-raised New Yorker, capturing the city’s character through his lens and storytelling. From shooting on his Canon A-1 to assistant editing the Sound One documentary, Chris brings a deep appreciation for New York’s film history to his work. He is currently assisting on the Sound One documentary and working at CBS, while also beginning pre-production on his own documentary focused on some of the city’s most vulnerable residents.
